Wild Dwarf Crested Iris, also called Blue Flag, is a perennial plant that is short for the Iris family (less than a foot high). The leaves are typical iris shaped but are low growing and droop over at the tips. The flowers have three parts. Three bluish sepals with very prominent white patches and yellow raised crests alternating with three narrower, solid blue sepals, and three smaller light colored petals above the crested sepals. The petals partially cover the yellow crests. The coloration varies from blue to light lavender. The plant grows from rhizomes and is usually found in dense colonies. Well-drained, partially shaded areas are preferred. A related species is the Vernal Iris, which is similar except that there is no crest (see image 3). There also is a rare form of crested iris that is white.
