DESCRIPTION

Virginia Bluebell is a native perennial plant that grows in good soil and mostly in low moist shady places. The leaves start showing up in early spring and blooming takes place in March. The plant eventually reaches 1 to 2 feet tall. The bloom consists of clusters of blue bell-shaped flowers, which gives the plant its common name. The buds are initially pink; turning more blue as the flower develops. The leaves are large and oval shaped. The plant goes dormant in late spring and disappears until the following season. If bluebells are used for a flower garden other plants are needed to fill the gap left when dormancy occurs. Bluebells can be grown from seed planted in the fall or early spring. The largest stand in the area is on private property along the east fork of the Flint River near New Market, AL.
