Feb 2006 BONESET (continued)
N. Walker

In the perfoliate Boneset species, the stem appears to be growing through the leaf. Early herbalists believed this to be a sign that boneset would be useful in setting bones, thus the reason for the plant common name. Some still believe that a boneset tea can cure everything from broken bones to colds and coughs. The plant on Monte Sano does not appear to be perfoliate so may be one of the non-perfoliate species, thus may be undependable for setting bones :-).
