Galax, Galax aphyllais, has, roundish, heart-shaped, and shiny leaves thoughout the summer. During the winter months the leaves become reddish or bronze. In May, clusters of small white flowers, appear on tall spikes. In the May 1 photo, the flowers have not yet opened. This attractive southern wildflower is found only in the Southern Appalachians, which DeSoto Park is considered a part of.
