DESCRIPTION

This perennial sunflower species is widespread over eastern U.S. It grows on the margins of woodlands. The lance-shaped leaves are opposite and have short stems and veins on each side curving parallel to the midrib. The leaves are slightly toothed and are rough on the upper surface. The flowers are about 2 inches in diameter. The ray flowers are bright yellow and the center disk is also yellow, becoming brown when mature.

Other sunflower species blooming locally in late July is the Small Flowered Sunflower, Helianthus, microcephalus. The plant is easy to grow and spreads by rhizomes.
