The J2 is the 225K LB Thrust LOX/LH2 engine built by Rocketdyne Division of North American Aviation.
One J2 engine is used for the S-IVB 3rd stage and five for the S-II 2nd Stage. The 3rd Stage J2 is configured for restart capability.
The J2 was the first manned booster engine to use liquid hydrogen as a propellant and the first large booster engine designed to be restarted multiple times during a mission.
The J-2 featured independently driven pumps for both liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, a gas generator to supply hot gas to two turbines running in series.
