DESCRIPTION

The cardinal flower is a favorite wildflower to people and pollinating creatures, including hummingbirds. It has a brilliant red flower that supposedly has the coloration of robes worn by Roman Catholic Cardinals. The plant propagates by short rhizomes but can also be grown from seeds. The seeds should not be stored in darkness. The flowers grow on long racemes, opening at the base first. The Huntsville Botanical Garden has masses of Cardinal Flowers but they are not common on hiking trails. Seed is available from garden supply centers and catalogs. By searching the web by the genus and species name, other sources for seed can be found.
