DESCRIPTION

In early March, the rolled up single leaf of bloodroot pushes up from the ground. The flower bud is inside of the leaf. As the leaf unrolls, the bud extends beyond the leaf and swells into one blossom. The flower has from 8 to 16 even numbered white petals, surrounding a bright yellow center. The flower is from 1 to 2 inches in diameter. The flower is very fragile and lasts only for a few days. The fragility of the flower makes picking futile. The flower will close at night and on cool cloudy days. The distinctly shaped leaf continues to grow after the flower is gone until summer, then dies. Bloodroot is about 6 inches high when blooming but grows to 10 inches before becoming dormant in mid summer. The bloodroot plant has only one multi-lobed leaf.
