Crop of larger photo to show close-up of climbers route to summit. There is no specific trail. Climbers usually start from end of ski lift. They are advised to start very early morning (in dark) so as to summit and get back down before sun softens the snow. The route can go on either side of the vent. There is at least one dangerous crevass to avoid. Mt Hood is the most popular major climbing mountain in the country. Dark sky is result of polarizing filter on camera lens. Joe told us about an accident involving a climber who slipped and pulled a number of tied together friends down into a deep crevass. The partially loaded rescue helicopter lost control and wrecked its rotor. People flying out of the disabled copter each revolution as it rolled down the mountain. 2nd helicopter dispatched to rescue live people still marooned in the crevass. All people survived except 3 crushed in the crevass.
