Photo of Wood carving in Lodge. Pioneer's route to Oregon City was blocked by Mt Hood. They either had to raft down the Columbia River or take the Barlow trail around Mt Hood. Laurel Hill, depicted in the carving, descended at an angle greater than 45 degrees.
