James G. Birney (portrayed by Topper Birney) was a North Alabama lawyer in the pre Civil War days. He also published a newspaper, in which he published his abolitionist opinions. Because of the unpopularity of these ideas, he moved to the North. He eventually achieved enough prominence to be a candidate for President on the Liberty Party ticket in 1840 and 1844. He is buried in New Jersey but on this day he is visiting his old friend Dr. Thomas Fearn.
